Port

A port is a number that TCP uses to route transmitted data to and from a particular program.

Some examples:

  • The Oracle Listener listens for incoming connections on a predefined port number (normally 1521 or 1526)
  • FTP used port 21
  • Telnet uses port 23
  • SMTP used port 25
