Hello Experts,

We have recently decided to move our standalone server to Oracle 10g 2 node RAC for which the preparations on the test environment have been initiated, so far oracle 10g DB have been setup on the 2 nodes with failover settings. Now my primary concern is to check on options for application servers failover settings, i would like to know if application server needs to be clustered. If so, is there a separate software for this clustering ? or do i have to install application server 10g software on each node separately and just specify DB servers details in TNS for the application server and failover is totally dependent on the DB RAC configuration. All i want to determine is how application can be safely failed over to the next available node with no downtime or loss of transactions/data. Here is a brief summary of setup:

Node 1 - Win 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition, Oracle 10g RAC database (10.2.0.3.0)
Node 2 - Win 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition, Oracle 10g RAC database (10.2.0.3.0)

Could you also answer to following :

a) How should i replicate/keep in sync my application data (a folder containing regularly changed forms/reports) on windows to node 2

Thank you
Ali

I'll have a try at answering. But you are asking huge questions, that do suggest that you haven;t read your manuals. Particularly this one:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/core.1012/b13997/toc.htm
You need to think about what application server components you are using. OC4J can be clustered, by design. Forms/Reports/Portal do not have a clustering capability, but by use of Web Cache in front of them you can get a similar effect. OID and SSO infrastructure components can be clustered, but you probably wouldn't want to.

And by the way, you must patch the database and clusterware up to 10.2.0.5 before doing anything else. 10.2.0.3 is full of bugs.

[update: wrong URL above, should be this:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/core.1012/b14003/toc.htm
sorry about that]

Hello John,

Thank you for the feedback. We use IAS components OC4J_BI_FORMS,reports for our application. I have deployed IAS for single node servers, as for this time we have 2 nodes with Oracle RAC database, i wanted to check on options for IAS avaialability.

Ali

Hi John,

Thank you for your reply on the subject, My target is to achieve failover for oracle forms based application. Now this is what i have currently in my setup :

1) 2 nodes with win2003 r2 (32 - bit)
2) Oracle RAC DB 10.2.0.5.0
3) Oracle Application Server IAS 10.1.2.3.0 on each node

I have included TNS entries for TAF under Oracle Infrastructure home of IAS and also under Oracle MiddleTier home of IAS.

After completing all the setup when i test failover for the clients like TOAD, SQL for the RAC DB it is absolutely fine. Unfortunately when i test my forms application for failover by switching off the DB to which forms client is connected it simply errors out "UNHANDLED EXCEPTION" and the session closes abruptly. Are there any specific settings i have to make in order to ensure forms client failsover to the next running node rather than getting disconnected with loss of transactions.

Thank you.
Ali

Ali, remember that no-one gets paid for helping you.

Thank you for explaining that your question is nothing to do with clustering Application Server (that was a waste of my time, wasn't it?)

What you are actually asking is whether Forms can do TAF. It can't. All is explained in MOS article 243303.1.

Hi John,

Thanks for your feedback, i do appreciate your help all the way through.
Please accept my apologies for being unclear with the scenario. My intentions were to get better understanding of the Failover with respect to my setup, and if my setup is wrong in the way it is now, I wanted to get some ideas to re-organize and frame it in a proper order to achieve best possible results for implementing availability.

Thank you.
Ali

Dear Experts,

Could you provide me with some ideas on how to achieve availability, following is what i have :

1) 2 servers with WIN 2003 SP2 installed
2) DB server 10g R2
3) Middleware - Oracle Application Server 10g R2
4) Customised forms Application
5) JDBC thin client Application (self service)

I have managed to succesfully test failover on the DB level. But iam unable to get a clear picture of how to implement availability concept on the middleware, the forms application and JDBC thin client application level (Idea here is to avoid any downtimes, i.e in case one server fails for any reasons the service should automatically failover to the next available node with no data / transaction loss )

Thanks for your suggestions and support.

Regards
Ali
